1. What is the purpose and vision of the scholarship fund?

The purpose of COOMS is to honor the memory of Chukudi Omar Osahor by investing in the education of exceptional young students in the fields of Mathematics and the Sciences. 

COOMs has 3 objectives:

  1. Identify promising young talent in Nigeria.
  2. Fund their studies over a 4-year period, renewable annually (dependent on program and continued eligibility)
  3. Assist in their professional success through coaching, networking, and professional assistance. 

The anticipated outcome of these efforts are to empower young talent to get closer to their dreams of adding impact to their world.

2. How much will the scholarship award be?

The annual scholarship will total the equivalent of $250 USD, a portion of which will be administered directly to the candidate’s school. 20% of the funds will be set aside for books and resources that will be transferred to the candidate directly.

3. What are the academic eligibility requirements?

Eligibility for COOMs will focus on:

Grade Level

  • Must have completed all university entrance requirements with official documentation

Target University (2025)

  • University of Jos

Academic Performance

  • Must have received a minimum of an A2 in Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology & Applied (Further) mathematics (if available)
  • Demonstrated record of academic excellence exceeding peer performance
  • Consistent academic achievement with measurable results
  • Strong performance in Mathematics and Science subjects
  • Ability to differentiate themselves through superior academic outcomes

Geographic and School Requirements

  • Must be a student residing in Nigeria
  • Initial focus on students from Command Secondary School, Jos

4. How will the scholarship fund be administered?

COOMs will be structured simply through an application process, a small candidate identification pool, identification process, and funds disbursement. The Foundation’s scholarship committee will select and administer the scholarship fund. 

5. How will scholarship recipients be selected?

Scholarship recipients will be selected by:

  1. A review of the potential recipient’s application. 
  2. The successful submission of all required documentation, including copies of GPA/official results, personal essays, and two professional recommendations. 
  3. The alignment of the candidates goals and purpose of the Memorial Scholarship.

The Winning recipient will be contacted through the communications channels submitted during the application.

7. What are the eligible fields of study?

The Chukudi Omar Osahor Memorial Scholarship Fund supports university students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields with an emphasis on practical applications and real-world problem-solving.

  • Mathematics
  • Pure and Applied Mathematics
  • Statistics and Data Science
  • Mathematical Modeling and Computational Mathematics
  • Physical Sciences

Physics: All branches including theoretical, experimental, applied physics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics

Chemistry: All branches including organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, biochemistry, industrial chemistry, and chemical engineering

Astronomy and Astrophysics

  • Life Sciences (Research-Focused)

Included: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Pharmacology, Drug Development, Epidemiology

Excluded: Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Direct Patient Care, Agricultural Science and Food Technology

9. What other documents do I need to apply?

In addition to the completed form (# 8 above), the scholarship committee requires the following documents: 

Academic Documentation

  • Official copies of final results for SS1, SS2, and SS3
  • Current academic transcripts or grade reports
  • Evidence of consistent academic performance

Written Components

  • 500-word personal essay on a topic of interest
  • Essay should demonstrate writing ability, critical thinking, and personal reflection
  • Clear articulation of goals, challenges overcome, and future aspirations

Professional Recommendations

  • Two (2) professional letters of recommendation
  • Must be from teachers, school administrators, or community leaders
  • Recommendations should address academic performance, character, and leadership potential

10. What is the deadline for applications?

The deadline for the 2025 applications is August 29th, 2025.

11. How will the scholarship fund be promoted?
